Creativity Curriculum Development

I am now working with the Visual Communication Department at Austin Community College to develop curriculum to bring more creativity and interactivity into the classroom and then teach this curriculum to the professors in the department. I’m really excited about this job. I’ve started going to VisCom classes and observing them. It’s an interesting mix of the technical (computer software, design principles) and the creative (making a print ad for a fictional movie, creating a fictional magazine cover). There are many different subjects, teaching styles, and class levels. Plus it is a pre-professional program, preparing students for the workplace. It will be a challenge to develop curriculum that is of value across the line–and to deliver it to the professors in a way that it can be most useful to them.

The other great bonus from this project is that I get to feel like I’m back in school a bit, taking art classes. I really do love being a student, like I love being a teacher. And I’m finding out cool stuff about subjects I didn’t even know I was interested in, like pixels per inch on the screen versus dots per inch on the printer. It makes me think I should go back to school someday, for the fun of it. If I could just get someone to pay me to do it . . .
