The Merlin Works Diversity Scholarship primarily aims to further open the world of Austin Improv to persons of color, though individuals who identify with any underprivileged background, culture, or community are welcome to apply.
Feliz Garcia is the recipient of one of the diversity scholarships for the 2019 Late Summer session. Her award will apply to Singing Improv 101 – 301 classes.
Originally from Corpus Christi, Feliz works as a legal professional and jewelry designer. Prior to registering with Merlin Works, Feliz had taken improv classes sporadically over the years. She participated in a Free Intro to Improv & Improv Singing class hosted by Merlin Works and “loved it!” she said, “It gave me the courage to submit for an audition for A Christmas Carol with Zach Theater.”
“I love acting and people!” she said, “(I) would love to get back in with a focus of long term classes so I can improve and learn more.”
As a single parent working multiple jobs, Feliz had to be creative. She also feels that having patience and eagerness to collaborate allowed her to grow.
“I fell down a lot and picked myself back up learning lots of great lessons,” she explained, “I have a lot of life experience and with that comes different flavors of creativity and personality. I can’t wait to start class and make acting a larger and more serious part of my life.”
