FAQ: I would love to take an improv class but I am broke. Any internships?

If you want to set up a payment plan for class, that works for us! Just email us at classes@merlin-works.com and let us know a payment schedule that works for you. If you’d like to take a class at 1/2 off, we offer a few 1/2 internships each session.

Here’s more detail:

Blogging (½ internship)

  • The internship requires an essay-length, improv-related blog to be published on the Merlin Works blog page bi-weekly.
    • You will be given a login to our WordPress account in order to do so. Login info to be provided by Shana Merlin
    • Writing samples are required to be considered for this internship.

Graphic Design (½ internship)

We’re looking for a talented graphic designer to produce marketing materials for Merlin Works! We need help producing a poster design, advertising our classes and monthly shows, for distribution all over Austin. We’ll work with you to perfect the design and then handle ordering and distribution ourselves. To apply for this internship, we’ll ask for examples of your prior design work.

Marketing intern (½ internship)

We need help getting the word out about classes for Merlin Works! Our marketing intern is responsible for internet marketing, including entering class information for the upcoming session to the various event websites catering to the Austin, TX market. Event submissions must be completed at least two weeks before the upcoming class session. Don’t worry! We have a list and plan for you to work from! The intern is responsible for marketing our Free Intro classes, Improv 101, Singing Improv 101, Improv for Professionals, and Family Improv classes at each site.

Stagehand intern (½ internship)

Once a month, you will assist with the Merlin Works Second Sunday Comedy Showcases at ZACH. This 1/2 internship is open to students who are NOT in a class scheduled to perform in the given session.

Interested? If so, to request an internship, email us at classes@merlin-works.com.

I am interested in bartering for classes, but will I need to do the internship at the same time as I take the classes? I only ask because currently I am awaiting knee surgery so none of the shifts will work for me. Will there be another internship offered in the fall or can I do something administrative now and while I am healing? My background is in business and I am currently earning my Associates degree in Business Administration if that helps you to figure out a place for me. I look forward to your response and thank you for offering this opportunity.

      Katherine,

It’s not necessary, but it works better, to align your internship with your class session. Merlin Works offers internships every session. We’re on a first-come, first-served basis, so the sooner you message us about your interest, the more likely you’ll get one of the 4 shifts available. Our Fall 2012 class schedule is up, so if you’d like to have a look on the website and see if there any classes that fit your schedule and you’re able to commit to one of the 4 intern shifts available, e-mail classes@merlin-works.com and we’ll see about getting you on the wait list. We do ask that you be very sure that you are able to commit to the internship. We’ve had several people drop their internships this session and it puts us in a pretty big bind, not to mention, it just isn’t courteous. It’s a good way to make us suspicious of your intent later on should you seek an internship again.
We also have two other administrative internships available. One is a video media internship that entails filming and editing video promotions for Merlin Works. A strong background in RTF is requested. You must also have your own equipment and editing software. The second is our communications media internship that entails writing and sending promotional e-mails via Mail Chimp. A strong creative writing background is requested for this internship. Training for this internship is provided by the previous intern.
I know this is a lot of information, so please take your time and let us know what you’d like to do.
We hope you’re healing well from your surgery.
